Crime and Punishment Crime and Punishment is a novel written by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky . It was first published in 1866 and is considered one of the great novels of world literature. The novel follows the mental anguish and moral dilemmas of Rodion Raskolnikov, an impoverished ex-student in Saint Petersburg who plans to kill an unscrupulous pawnbroker. After committing the crime, he is plagued with guilt and paranoia and confronts the consequences of his actions both internally and externally.
